Gilda Lozoya released on conditional bail within scope of Agronitrogenados case

Gilda Susana Lozoya Austin, one of the prominent figures who came to the agenda with allegations of corruption and money laundering in Mexico, has been temporarily released not in detention but under the framework of conditional bail for the continuation of the penal process. Lozoya, who was brought before the judiciary in connection with the case known internationally as 'Agronitrogenados' and alleged to involve the illegal use of public resources, had exhibited a strong stance during the hearing, arguing that the situation was entirely a political operation. A federal judge decided to release her for trial under judicial control instead of continuing detention, setting the condition that she remain under judicial control.

The legal process regarding her began with an initial hearing held at the Reclusorio Norte prison, which is affiliated with the Federal Center for Criminal Justice located in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, and this hearing lasted approximately ten hours. The court, presided over by Judge Nora Ileana García Peralta, decided that there was no need for Lozoya to remain detained. The decision stated that various and strict protection measures would be taken to ensure the guarantee that the defendant would not evade justice during the continuation of the trial. These measures were designed to seriously restrict the defendant's freedom of movement and ensure the process was followed transparently.

In accordance with the decision given by the court, a ban on residing or being present was imposed on Gilda Lozoya within Mexico City limits and across the entire country; additionally, the obligation to sign at the judicial control desk in person at the protection measures unit every fifteen days was imposed. In addition to this, her passport was confiscated to completely prevent her exit abroad. These practices serve as a legal mechanism to guarantee that the defendant remains accessible during the trial process and to minimize the risk of escape.

Pursuant to an additional decree issued by the judiciary authorities, the condition was imposed to wear an electronic bracelet within ten days to ensure the monitoring of Gilda Lozoya's location by the state 24/7. This file, mentioned as part of the corruption cases of Lozoya's brother, former Pemex (Petroleum Administration) General Director Emilio Lozoya, is directly linked to the Odebrecht bribery ring and widespread public tender corruption that left deep traces in Mexican politics. The conditional release decision is seen as the newest step taken for the protection of evidence and witnesses in this high-profile case.

The process of Gilda Lozoya's arrest and release also brought 'political settling of scores' debates in Mexican politics.
