Lavrov to the West in Moskova: You are hypocrites, you are sabotaging negotiations

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov criticized Western countries with his statements during his visit to Maputo, suggesting that they acted hypocritically regarding finding a solution to the Ukraine war. Claiming that Western leaders are deliberately sabotaging this process while making calls for negotiation, Lavrov stated that Russia's trust in the West has been completely exhausted. Speaking to the press after meeting with Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria dos Santos Lucas, Lavrov noted that European countries have started presenting open ultimatums to Russia. He argued that this situation is proof that previously reached diplomatic solutions, which were guaranteed by the West, have been squandered. Lavrov also met with President Daniel Chapo to discuss regional issues and the global impacts of the conflict.

In his statements, Lavrov pointed to the past, claiming that the agreements reached in 2014, 2015, and 2019 under the West's guarantee were directly destroyed or invalidated by Western powers. Arguing that an agreement almost finalized between Russia and Ukraine in 2022 was also sabotaged by the West's explicit interventions, the Minister emphasized that Russia no longer believes Western countries are sincere. In this regard, he stated that Moskova's reserve of goodwill has been completely exhausted and an irreversible point has been reached. Reiterating their determination to achieve the strategic objectives set by President Vladimir Putin in Haziran 2024 regarding Ukraine, Lavrov declared that they will not deviate from these goals. This harsh rhetoric reveals Russia's intention to remain loyal to its military and strategic objectives rather than seeking a diplomatic solution to the ongoing war.

Within the scope of the Africa tour that the Moskova government has recently undertaken to diversify its diplomatic relations, Mozambik stands out as an important stop. In his assessments there, Lavrov presented his detailed perspective to Mozambican officials regarding the roots of the Ukraine crisis and the West's role in this process. Stating that the Mozambika people and administration view this complex global issue with understanding, the Minister praised their measured stance on international platforms such as the United Nations. He particularly commended African countries for exhibiting an independent stance by not yielding to the West's efforts to occupy the entire global agenda with the Ukraine issue. The visit holds great importance in terms of Russia's desire to maintain its traditional influence in the African continent and find new allies against international sanctions.

Mozambik Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria dos Santos Lucas, in her joint statement with Lavrov, stated that her country and the African continent in general are determined to see the crisis resolved through diplomatic means. Arguing that a fair and lasting peace must be achieved to end the violence, Lucas noted that dialogue and negotiation are indispensable. In addition to the Ukraine issue, rising tensions in Iran and the Basra Körfezi region were also brought up during the discussions. Lucas pointed out that the economic shocks created by these regional crises around the world have extended as far as Mozambike, stating that the increase exceeding %40 in fuel and basic commodity prices has deeply affected the local population. This situation revealed how economically vulnerable countries that are part of global conflicts are.

In the final part of the meeting, tensions in Iran and its surroundings were also discussed, and the global dimension of regional crises was debated. Arguing that current crises can only be overcome with comprehensive solutions that would prevent not only the parties but the entire global economy from suffering, Lavrov directed criticisms at the unfair structure of the UN and other international institutions. Claiming that the pushy attitude of the USA and its allies has created instability not only in Ukraine but in many parts of the world, the Minister argued that Russia continues its pursuit of a multipolar world order. All these statements are considered part of Russia's strategy to increase its global influence during a period when global power balances are being reshaped. Consequently, this summit stands out as a significant development demonstrating how intensely polarization and diplomatic maneuvers in the international arena continue.
