Fiber-Enriched Subsidized Bread in Tunus: Reality or Illusion?

The new fiber-rich subsidized baguette officially announced by the Tunus government remains unavailable in most bakeries across the country, despite approximately three months having passed since its launch. Consumers are experiencing significant difficulties in obtaining this highly anticipated new product, which raises serious public doubts regarding the government's ability to fulfill its promises. Citizens wish to integrate this promised, more nutritious bread into their daily lives, but they are experiencing frustration due to these supply shortages. The lack of coordination between bakery owners and authorities appears to have caused the process to progress problematically from the very beginning. The production and sale of the aforementioned fiber-enriched bread were given a legal framework through a joint decree by the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade, published in the official gazette (Jort) on 3 Nisan. This official regulation envisaged offering the public a more nutritious alternative that would be sold at the exact same price as the existing subsidized bread. The government's step was evaluated as a strategic move aimed at both encouraging healthier eating habits among the public and supporting food security by increasing the nutritional value of flour.
