A woman known as Celena on social media shared a disturbing experience of this kind that she had on a bus in Chicago from her own account. However, after the incident spread on social media, viewers became seriously divided over how Celena handled the situation.

The ensuing argument broke out between Celena and a healthcare worker standing right behind her on the bus. According to the video posted on Instagram on 6 Temmuz, Celena asked the woman not to invade her personal space and to stop shouting on the phone. Allegedly, the woman became enraged at this polite warning and threatened to punch Celena; it was exactly at this point that Celena started recording. When the woman realized she was being recorded, she turned to Celena and reacted by shamelessly yelling, "Mind your own damn business!" Considering that the actual behavior being complained about was her making a one-sided public broadcast, this reaction pointed to a quite ironic situation.

The controversial aspect of the incident was that Celena's action was not limited to just recording a video. Celena took a close-up shot of the woman's employee badge containing her workplace and identity information, exposing her by tagging the organization. While defending her actions, Celena stated that there were empty seats on the bus and the woman could have easily moved back; she also emphasized that she refused to leave her seat because she was threatened. When viewers took action at this point, asking the user, "What would you do in such a situation?", the incident completely turned into a battleground on social media. While many agreed that Celena was justified in her reaction, the number of those who disapproved of her method of exposure was also significantly high.

The main reason Celena did not see the unconditional support she had hoped for was the increasing prominence of comments criticizing the interference with a person's livelihood. One of the healthcare workers reacting to the incident stated that this isolated incident had nothing to do with the person's job, arguing that today's economy is too fragile for people's livelihoods to be tampered with over such simple reasons. Another commenter pointed out that no one can police another person's behavior like a cop, stating that using public transportation brings along such comfort issues, but no one is obligated to create an environment where another person feels comfortable, short of physical or verbal abuse. These comments sparked an important debate on social media's cancel culture.

On the other hand, thousands of users on the other side of the debate supported Celena, stating that the woman's behavior was extremely rude and disrespectful. In a comment that received 10.000 likes on one of the agenda-setting social media accounts, it was emphasized that someone exhibiting such behavior in a work uniform should definitely be reported to their organization's human resources department. Supporters argued that the matter was actually very simple, stating that the basic rule of etiquette in enclosed and crowded spaces like public transportation is to use headphones, hold the phone to the ear, or call back when getting off. Today, where a new social crisis erupts every day with the smartphones we never let out of our hands, the boundaries of privacy in public living spaces are constantly being redrawn alongside technology.
