Scandal at Private School in Peru: Allegations of Sexual Abuse of a 10-Year-Old Child

Allegations of sexual abuse involving a 10-year-old boy have emerged at the Mayorazgo campus of Innova Schools, located in the Ate district of Lima, the capital of Peru. Following the incident, upon a complaint filed by the child's family, the prosecutor's office officially announced that a protective investigation has been launched. As part of the investigation, the aim is to fully clarify all aspects of the incidents that occurred within the school and to identify those responsible within the framework of protecting the rights of children and adolescents. Authorities, attempting to clarify how the incident occurred by reaching the victim and witnesses, have initiated a rigorous judicial process. Such cases occurring in private educational institutions have created a deep wave of concern regarding school safety and child protection protocols in the country.

The Santa Anita Family Court Chief Prosecutor's Office, conducting the investigation, identified seven 11-year-old students suspected of being involved in the incident. Chief Prosecutor Rubén Darío Narrea Huamaní, who is leading the investigation, ordered comprehensive judicial inquiries. In this context, it was decided to examine the recordings from the school's security cameras and to access the registration forms of all students involved in the incident. Additionally, the victim's statement is planned to be taken using a special method—the Gesell room technique—to prevent psychological trauma. The statements of the victim's mother, the school principal, and other suspects are also being taken to investigate all details of the process.

Following the incident's reflection in the public eye, the Lima Metropolitan Regional Education Directorate (DRELM) took action and initiated an inspection process. The institution intervened in the incident by working in coordination with the prosecutor's office, the Ombudsman's Office, and other relevant institutions, and began inspecting the adequacy of the protocols at the school. Furthermore, it was recommended to temporarily suspend in-person education to protect the educational community and provide necessary psychological support. This decision aims to overcome the shock caused by the incident and to re-establish student safety. Authorities are also observing in the field whether the school administration has taken the necessary measures through these inspections.

To manage the problem and prevent similar cases, Innova Schools management also announced that they have taken some urgent measures. School officials stated that they reported the case to the official SíSeVe (Child Abuse Reporting) platform and officially notified the Local Educational Management Unit (UGEL). In order to close security gaps, a new administrator was appointed to the Mayorazgo campus, and security measures in common areas were increased. The institution also stated that they plan to install extra security cameras and create special listening areas to strengthen communication with parents. The management emphasized that they will cooperate with legal authorities until the end of the process and ensure transparency.

This incident is not just an issue of a single school or student, but it has also led to the questioning of inspection mechanisms in private educational institutions in Peru. Parents and experts argue that much stricter and continuous supervision is required for children to feel safe in the school environment. The investigation conducted by the prosecutor's office, the victimized family's search for justice, and the steps taken by the school management are being closely followed on the country's agenda. The delivery of results and the referral of those responsible to the judiciary will have a deterrent effect and set an example for other schools. In such sensitive cases, the priority of children's rights and the importance of psychological support mechanisms have once again come to light.
