The Hidden Costs of Transitioning from a Company to Paid Employment in Polonya

New regulations by the State Labor Inspectorate (PIP) in Polonya are driving a significant portion of freelancers and business owners to transition to the traditional paid employment system (etat). The main reason for this structural change is that the legal protections obtained by employees under labor legislation are becoming increasingly attractive. Thanks to the new rules, employers are encouraged to include contracted personnel in their official headcounts by tightening their inspections regarding flexible working arrangements and subcontracting companies. Many entrepreneurs see closing their own businesses as a more logical option due to increasing bureaucratic burdens and inspection pressure. This situation is causing a fundamental transformation in employment models in the country.

Experts warn that although transitioning from a company to paid employment offers more job security, it can have serious financial consequences. Closing an independent business necessitates the restructuring of accounts with tax authorities, and this process can often result in unexpected tax debts. For entrepreneurs who use real estate or company vehicles in their business, this situation becomes much more complicated. Removing assets from the company inventory or converting them for personal use is a process that can give rise to additional tax liabilities. For this reason, it is of great importance to make a detailed financial plan before making a decision to change jobs.

One of the most obvious financial losses of closing your own business is the complete loss of the right to deduct expenses from taxable income (tax deductions). A person running a company can legally reduce their tax burden by writing off many items, from vehicle leasing to office expenses. However, once one becomes a paid employee, such expenses can no longer be deducted from the tax base, as they must now be covered from personal income. The costs of financing methods that are extremely common for businesses, such as vehicle leasing, must now be fully covered from the personal budget. This situation requires individuals transitioning to the new work arrangement to restructure their monthly budgets in a stricter manner.

As a natural consequence of the above factors, transitioning to paid employment often leads to a decrease in the net salary amount reflected in the bank in many cases. Even if the gross amount of earnings looks similar, non-deductible expenses and higher tax brackets significantly reduce the net salary. Although social benefits and income security provided by the employer offer an advantage, this reduction in monthly cash flow is a challenging situation, especially for households with regular and high expenses. Many former entrepreneurs are forced to change their spending habits to cope with the psychological and economic stress of earning less. This financial shock is one of the most visible and bitter effects of the transition period in the labor market on individuals.

Despite all these difficulties and financial losses, legal rights under labor legislation are considered valuable enough by many to compensate for short-term financial losses. For those who want to escape the uncertainties of the freelance working model and constantly updated complex tax rules, paid employment can offer a calmer and more predictable life. The state supports individuals in their decisions in this regard by strengthening the social security net provided for employees. However, it is clear that this transition will not be suitable for everyone in terms of personal economic conditions, existing assets, and sector dynamics. Consequently, transitioning from entrepreneurship to the wage-labor system represents a highly personal and delicate balance that must be carefully calculated between advantages and disadvantages.
