Steam Machine Reservations Skyrocket Up to $3.000 on eBay

Valve's long-awaited new hardware, Steam Machine, has been a major subject of debate since its price was announced. The price tags, inflated incredibly due to the RAM crisis triggered by the artificial intelligence boom, drew severe backlash from gamers. Details such as no model being sold for under bin euro and the absence of a controller in the box negatively impacted the device's initial popularity. Interestingly, however, despite these astronomical prices, pre-order stocks in Valve's official store sold out within seconds. Now, opportunistic sellers are trying to make a profit by selling these reservations on auction sites on their own.

The situation has turned into absolute madness on platforms like eBay. The 512 GB model, which normally has an official price of 1.128 dolar, is being offered for sale by speculators for 2.500 dolar. The 2 TB version, which offers more storage space and has an official price of 1.428 dolar, is trying to find buyers for up to 3.000 dolar in the second-hand market. Authorities and hardware experts emphasize that considering the massive file sizes of today's modern games, the 512 GB model is almost non-functional and inadequate for gaming. It is noted that one could build a computer with similar components six months ago for a much lower cost.

Looking at the hardware's performance, the power of the system offered by Valve is roughly at the level of PlayStation 5, a six-year-old console. However, the raw power offered by the device is being questioned due to the lack of storage space and exorbitant prices in the second-hand market. The 512 GB models are absolutely insufficient to hold modern AAA games, which currently have massive file sizes of 100 or 150 GB. For this reason, users who want to make the device functional need to expand their own storage space at an additional cost. This situation pushes the total cost of the already expensive device to an even more unbearable level.

Valve took some important positive and negative steps during this launch process. The company's biggest mistake was offering Steam Machine for sale only through its own online store. The exclusion of large, global marketplaces like Amazon from the process severely restricted consumer access to the device. While this caused ordinary gamers who wanted to acquire the device to face difficulties, it made things easier for intermediaries and scalpers. Limited access and severe demand imbalance paved the way for prices in the market to spiral out of control.

On the other hand, Valve showed that it learned from the commercial bot problems it experienced during the era of its previous device, Steam Deck. In the past, the system that was implemented and operated on a 'first come, first served' logic had benefited automated bots that scanned the sites for 24 hours. In the new era, Valve organized a registration period lasting a few days instead of sudden sales made on a specific date and time. The company, which received more reservations than available stock, then decided to distribute the devices by conducting a fair lottery among these registrations. In addition, strict rules were introduced, such as requiring the user to have a previously shopped, non-banned account and allowing only one order per household. This smart system aims to cut off opportunists with fast internet and bots, and to protect real gamers.
