Barutlusu Festival Cancelled in Tefenni Due to Economic Reasons

Tefenni Mayor Ümit Alagöz announced that the upcoming Barutlusu Festival will not be held in 2026. Following intense questions from citizens in recent days regarding the festival's fate, Mayor Alagöz made a candid assessment, stating that they made this decision by taking the economic conjuncture and the district's priority needs into account. The official emphasized that allocating resources to such an organization under current economic conditions would not be appropriate. Stating that the decision is difficult but equally realistic, Alagöz appealed to the understanding of the district's residents. Thus, the budget of approximately 15 million TL is planned to be redirected to different areas.

The mayor specifically emphasized that they have made it a principle to use every penny of the budget without waste, in the right places that will benefit the public. Drawing attention to the fact that Turkey and its local economy are going through a difficult process, Alagöz stated that tradesmen, farmers, business people, and retirees are struggling with increasing costs. He argued that making a large entertainment and organization expenditure during a period when such broad segments are experiencing economic hardship is incompatible with social sensitivity. In his statement, he noted that the district has more urgent needs, significant shortcomings that must be completed, and projects waiting to be implemented. The official stated that they believe investing this resource of approximately 15 million TL directly into the future of Tefenni is a much more logical approach.

Under normal circumstances, it is known that a significant portion of the festival's budget could be covered by sponsor support. However, Mayor Alagöz stated that they are also showing great sensitivity towards the difficult situation the business world and local producers are in. He expressed that during this period when economic difficulties affect everyone, they do not want to put commercial institutions and organizations under an additional financial burden. He stated that they believe it would not be ethical to request financial support in this context from business people and producers who are already making great sacrifices. In line with this vision, a definitive decision was made to cancel the Barutlusu Festival in 2026 in order not to burden sponsors.

The idea that leaving permanent works for future generations is much more valuable than short-lived entertainments forms the basis of the decision. Mayor Alagöz stated that they believe the solid infrastructure investments to be made today will yield a greater return than even the most magnificent festival to be held tomorrow. The massive budget considered for the festival will be used in concrete projects such as road construction work in the district, the renovation of parks, and the strengthening of infrastructure services. Furthermore, this resource will be transferred to long-lasting social facilities and new service projects from which the youth, children, and all fellow citizens in the district can directly benefit. Thus, the municipality will focus on physical investments that will serve for years and change the face of the city, rather than temporary excitement.

At the end of his statement, the official shared an emotional message of thanks directed at the people of Tefenni. He added that the sole criterion in every decision they make is the benefit of the district and the welfare of the public, and that no one should have the slightest doubt about this. He heartfeltly offered his gratitude to each citizen for the understanding, support, and trust shown by the public. It was emphasized that this radical decision is a mandatory step for the long-term development and sustainable growth of the district.
