Death Toll Rises to 2 in Tekirdağ Çorlu Apartment Explosion

A severe explosion on the top floor of a six-story apartment located in Hıdırağa Mahallesi Borsa Meydanı in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ caused massive panic in the area. Initially strongly believed to be caused by natural gas, the incident caused significant destruction on the building's top floor. Immediately after the incident, numerous health, fire department, and police teams were dispatched to the area, and extensive security measures were taken. Arriving at the scene upon notification from surrounding citizens, the teams quickly began working to reach citizens trapped under the rubble or injured. As a result of this tragic incident, it was reported that two people have lost their lives so far, while two others were injured and received medical treatment.

During this horrific incident, 34-year-old Caner Meriç, who fell from the sixth floor of the building due to the force of the explosion, tragically lost his life at the scene. On the other hand, Muhammed El Hüseyin, a Syrian national who was severely injured by the impact of the explosion and urgently taken to Çorlu Devlet Hastanesi, could not be saved despite all medical interventions performed at the hospital. Thus, the death toll in the incident rose to two. Authorities announced that the other two injured individuals are being kept under observation in the hospital for protective reasons and that their general health conditions are progressing well. The fact that the injured receiving treatment at the hospital are not in life-threatening danger stands out as the only source of consolation following this tragic accident.

The physical damage caused by the explosion was not limited to the interior of the apartment; significant destruction also occurred on the exterior facade of the building. Concrete fragments and broken glass thrown outside due to the severe explosion fell onto three vehicles parked in front of the apartment. This situation caused the mentioned vehicles to sustain heavy damage, rendering them unusable. Police teams securing the area cordoned off the surroundings with a wide security perimeter to prevent any additional dangers. Expert teams assigned to inspect the scene are conducting a meticulous investigation to determine the mechanism of the explosion and any potential negligence.

Çorlu Kaymakamı Niyazi Erten, who arrived at the scene to conduct inspections, made statements to inform the public. In his statement, Kaymakam Erten stated that the disaster is believed to have been caused by natural gas, announcing that a comprehensive investigation has been launched into the matter. Furthermore, Erten confirmed that a total of two people died, both at the scene and at the hospital, while noting that the health condition of the injured is stable and they are in the process of recovery. The Kaymakam also emphasized that the necessary security measures have been taken flawlessly in the building where the explosion occurred and that there are no security vulnerabilities left in the area.

Following this painful incident, other residents of the building are also being supported regarding their accommodation needs so that they do not suffer any victimization. Kaymakam Niyazi Erten stated that the building residents have been temporarily housed and that every psychological and financial support they need is being provided. Authorities expressed that the incident has been completely brought under control and that the local public has no need to worry. It is also among the information received that all natural gas lines in the area will be re-inspected to prevent such natural gas explosions. Experts argue that this tragic incident once again highlights how vital it is to periodically inspect natural gas installations.
