Brazilian Fighters in Ukraine

Brazil is third in the number of foreign fighters who have died or gone missing in Ukraine. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that 35 Brazilians have died and 92 are missing. Ukraine is increasing its incentives for foreign fighters to join the war, but the Brazilian government is not providing any support or regulation for its citizens to participate.

Most Brazilian fighters are joining the Legião Internacional da Defesa Territorial, a foreign legion created by Ukraine. However, Russia refers to these fighters as 'mercenaries', which means they are not protected by the Geneva Convention if they are captured. In Brazil, the families of fighters and the fighters themselves are not receiving sufficient support from the government. The Itamaraty is concerned about the increasing number of Brazilian fighters who have died or gone missing, but it is not taking sufficient measures to address the issue.
