War Crimes Allegation Against Israel by Amnesty International: 24 Civilians Killed in Lebanon

Amnesty International stated that the airstrikes carried out by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon must be immediately investigated as war crimes. The human rights organization noted that these attacks, which occurred in March 2026, constitute a clear violation of international law. According to the allegations, the Israeli army exclusively targeted civilian settlements and homes sheltering families. The organization emphasized that this situation is entirely contrary to the principle of distinction required by international humanitarian law. These events have once again revealed how devastating the scale of escalating tensions and conflicts in the Middle East is.

The attacks in question targeted settlements located in the Tyre, Sidon, and Nabatieh regions of Lebanon. Following investigations, it was determined that a total of 24 people were killed in the airstrikes targeting civilian infrastructure in this region. Among the deceased, there are numerous innocent civilians, including 12 children, 6 women, and 6 adult men. Furthermore, the fact that one of the deceased women was in the late stages of pregnancy further exacerbates the tragedy and humanitarian drama of the incident. At least 18 civilians, including children, were severely injured in the attacks and transferred to regional hospitals.

Amnesty International ensured the independent and impartial verification of the events through a comprehensive field investigation conducted in the region. As part of the investigation, testimonies from eyewitnesses were heard, various visual and audio materials were examined in detail, and satellite imagery was analyzed. As a result of these examinations, it was confirmed that there were no military targets or activities at the moments of the explosions in the areas bombed by the Israeli military. These findings corroborate suspicions that civilians and civilian settlements were deliberately targeted. Human rights advocates point out that these actions constitute intentional inhumane treatment, demanding that those responsible be brought to justice.

Kristine Beckerle, the organization's Regional Deputy Director, strongly condemned this brutality, stating that the Israeli army wiped out entire families in just one week. Amnesty International called on the entire global community to put an end to the violence against the Lebanese people without delay. In this context, it is emphasized that an immediate and unconditional arms embargo must be imposed against Israel. Furthermore, states are encouraged to exercise universal jurisdiction to ensure that the military and political officials responsible for the massacre are prosecuted. Lebanese authorities are also invited to officially accept the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court regarding these crimes committed on their territory.

It is impossible to be satisfied with the response given by the Israeli side to the aforementioned criticisms. In their official statement made in the last days of June, Israeli officials merely reiterated general and unproven claims that Hezbollah uses civilian infrastructure. No concrete evidence or compelling justification was provided to prove that the bombed residential areas had become military targets. This approach, rather than alleviating the concerns of the international community and human rights organizations, has further highlighted the existing lack of transparency. Ensuring accountability through independent mechanisms appears essential for establishing lasting peace and the rule of law in the region.
