US Vice President JD Vance announced he will attend the memorial ceremony at Ground Zero in New York for the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Vance described the meeting with former President Joe Biden in ironic terms, saying they would have "many intense intellectual conversations." This will be the first time they have been in the same setting since President Trump's inauguration in January 2025.
Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, along with former First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush, will also be present at the ceremony. President Trump is expected to attend a separate memorial ceremony at the Pentagon; other officials will represent the Shanksville, Pennsylvania ceremony. Vance stated that Trump's decision not to go to New York was not due to security concerns.
Vance emphasized that 9/11 is becoming history for younger generations, suggesting that Americans who do not remember that day watch the ceremony to grasp the meaning of the moment. Recounting his visit to the memorials with his family during the 2024 campaign, Vance expressed that the tragic day created a "shared sense of purpose and fellowship" that united Americans.
