Vancouver keeps Granville Caddesi open for pedestrians until end of summer

The local government in the Canadian city of Vancouver has decided to continue the application of the Granville Caddesi pedestrian path, which was temporarily created for World Cup football matches, throughout the summer. The city council unanimously approved for the regulation to continue for the remainder of the summer season, considering the positive atmosphere and intense interest in the area closed to vehicle traffic. The decision was made to increase mobility in the city center and offer pedestrians a more spacious living area.

The temporary traffic measures implemented within the scope of the World Cup organization gained more popularity than expected and received great appreciation from the local tradespeople and citizens. Although Granville Caddesi has heavy vehicle traffic under normal conditions, it turned into one of the city's social life centers during the period it was opened to pedestrians. As a result of the voting, it was decided to extend this successful pilot application until the end of the summer, i.e., the beginning of September.

In a statement regarding the issue, the Mayor of Vancouver stated that this step, taken to revitalize the city center and facilitate the public's access to open spaces, is a very important opportunity. The Mayor added that creating an environment where pedestrians can walk comfortably, sit, and socialize on the street will also add vitality to the local economy. Tradespeople representatives also expressed support for the decision by stating that closing the street to traffic increased sales and customer potential.

The planning department announced that following the evaluations to be made at the end of the summer, new steps could be taken to make the application permanent or revise it. City officials continue to take necessary precautions to minimize disruptions in logistical matters such as bus routes and cargo transportation. Citizens are invited to submit their feedback regarding the allocation of the street to pedestrians via the city's official website.

This decision is seen as one of the most concrete steps taken in line with Vancouver's sustainable urban transformation goals.
