Death Toll in Venezuela Earthquakes Rises to 1719

Venezuela plunged into deep mourning and devastation following two destructive earthquakes that occurred on 24 Haziran. According to an official statement made by the country's parliament speaker Jorge Rodríguez, the death toll from the earthquakes reached 1719. Additionally, it was reported that over 5 thousand people were affected with various injuries based on initial responses at the scene and hospital admissions. The assessments made by the United Nations regarding the situation reveal how severe the picture is. The international organization predicts that the number of missing persons could reach up to 50 thousand, considering the severity of the destruction and the situation of those trapped under the rubble.

At the epicenter of the disaster, two major tremors following each other within seconds caused massive panic. These earthquakes, with magnitudes recorded as 7.2 and 7.5 respectively, created a devastating impact on the region's infrastructure and buildings. Aftershocks were not lacking in the region immediately following the main tremors; it was stated that a total of 609 aftershocks have been recorded by authorities so far. Authorities are urging the public to remain constantly vigilant and cautious. Because these aftershocks, the strongest of which measured a magnitude of 4.2, continue to cause great anxiety among the already psychologically traumatized public.

The destructive power of the earthquakes was felt most severely especially in the country's capital, Caracas, and La Guaira state. According to the latest damage assessment reports shared by authorities, a total of 855 buildings in the region were negatively affected and suffered severe damage. Furthermore, it was reported that 189 buildings completely collapsed and became unusable. These figures bring to light the significant threat to the country's housing stock and the need to question the infrastructure in terms of earthquake standards. Debris removal efforts for the collapsed buildings are continuing intensively.

The growing clarity of the disaster's scale each passing day has mobilized the international community. Following the alarming and striking estimates of the United Nations, most countries mobilized to send emergency aid and search and rescue teams to Venezuela. It is reported that globally, at least 17 countries have sent medical supplies, tents, and expert personnel to the region. Authorities frequently emphasize that search and rescue operations continue uninterruptedly day and night. However, landslides and damaged roads make it quite difficult to deliver aid materials to the most remote villages.

It seems that overcoming the trauma experienced by the public and rebuilding the region after the natural disaster will be a long and difficult process. Authorities warn that caution must be taken against aftershocks to prevent further loss of life and that damaged buildings must absolutely not be entered. While the government tries to meet emergency shelter needs on one hand, it has started working on replanning the destroyed infrastructure on the other.
