H5N1 Bird Flu Virus Detected for the First Time in New Zealand

The H5N1 virus, known as highly pathogenic avian influenza, has been detected for the first time in New Zealand.

Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard announced that the virus was confirmed following examinations of a migratory seabird that washed ashore near the capital, Wellington.
