US National Debt Exceeds $40 Trillion

The United States Department of the Treasury announced that the total US national debt has exceeded $40 trillion for the first time. This is due to the impact of increasing entitlements and interest payments, combined with decreasing revenues.

According to the Treasury Department's daily statement, the total debt is $40.047 trillion, consisting of $32.266 trillion in debt held by the public and $7.782 trillion in intragovernmental holdings held by federal agencies. The US national debt reaching this level is being closely monitored by economists and policymakers.
