Severe Rainfall Closes Roads in Colombia: Thousands of Passengers Affected

The severe rainfall that has affected the Arauca, Casanare, and Boyacá regions of Colombia in recent days has brought about a serious transportation crisis, leading to the closure of strategic highway routes. Authorities announced that mobility in the region has been largely disrupted due to landslides, floods, and rockfalls; and that some rural communities have been temporarily isolated.

The closure of the main roads connecting the center of the country to the Orinoco region is negatively affecting daily life, especially commercial activities and health services. According to data from authorities, while an average of 2,500 passengers suffer daily due to transportation restrictions, serious delays and increasing logistics costs are also experienced in freight transport.

The current situation is not only a transportation problem but also poses a major threat to the regional economy. Officials and regional authorities announced that following this crisis, economic losses have already exceeded 300 million Colombian pesos. Experts warn that if the rains continue, disruptions in food and fuel supply and price increases may be inevitable.
