Koreans Unite for Reunification

The Korean legislature and civil society groups called for a unified Korea based on democracy, freedom, and human rights, amid growing debates over the 'two Koreas' approach. The 'One Korea Union Rally' was held at the National Assembly on August 15, ahead of the National Liberation Day holiday. The event was organized by the Citizens' Union, a civil society group working for Korean reunification. The organizers noted that Liberation Day is not only a celebration of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule but also a reminder of the unfinished task of overcoming the country's division. Participants included lawmakers, civil activists, North Korean defectors, and academics. They argued that the establishment of 'two Koreas' as separate states could lead to the permanent division of the Korean Peninsula and demanded reunification based on constitutional principles. National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee chairman and member of the conservative People Power Party (PPP) Song Seok-jun emphasized that a unified Korea should be achieved based on constitutional principles.
