Shocking development in the knife-armed robbery and assault case in İzmir: Defendant re-arrested

The terrible incident that occurred in İzmir's Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Mahallesi on 25 Ekim 2024 had deeply shaken the local community. Çağlar Efe D., who was 16 years old at the time of the incident, began following Betül Ç., a neighbor he had been interested in for a while, on the street. Catching up to the young girl who tried to run away suspecting the situation, the attacker subtly attacked her with a knife, injuring her in the neck. Upon bystanders immediately reporting the situation to the 112 Acil Çağrı Merkezi, medical and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene. The injured young girl was taken to the hospital and treated after receiving first aid in the ambulance.

Çağlar Efe D., who quickly fled and disappeared after the incident, was identified shortly after through the review of security cameras and the coordinated work of police and gendarmerie teams. The suspect was caught in an operation conducted one day after the incident at his father's residence in Beşyol Mahallesi, where he was hiding. During the searches conducted on the suspect and in the house, the mobile phone he had forcibly taken from Betül Ç. was also found. Çağlar Efe D., who was taken into custody, was referred to the courthouse after the procedures were completed, and was arrested by the court he was brought before and sent to prison.

The lawsuit filed regarding the incident began to be heard at the İzmir 2'nci Çocuk Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi. The charge of 'Qualified attempted intentional killing' was included in the case because the assaulted Betül Ç. is a child and a woman. The prosecutor's office prepared an indictment demanding a maximum prison sentence of 12 years for the crime of 'Armed robbery' due to the use of a knife in the incident. The court panel convicted the defendant of 'attempted intentional killing' and 'armed robbery' after the trial process, sentencing him to a total of 18 years and 8 months in prison. While an acquittal verdict was given for the threat charge due to insufficient evidence, the file was sent to the Bölge Adliye Mahkemesi (appeals court) upon the objection of the defense side.

The appeals court ruled to overturn the decision made by the local court and return the file to the İzmir 2'nci Çocuk Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi for re-evaluation. The court, which resumed the trial process on 7 Temmuz, decided to 'release by right' citing reasons such as the defendant's age, the time he spent in detention, and having a fixed residence. Çağlar Efe D., who was released, was set free with a ban on leaving the country and judicial control conditions applied.

However, the release decision was subject to serious objections by the İzmir Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı. Evaluating the prosecutor's objection, the court overturned the decision and ruled for a new arrest warrant for Çağlar Efe D. Upon this, the hiding suspect was quickly detained by police teams. Çağlar Efe D., whose procedures at the police station were completed, was arrested again by the on-duty court he was brought before and sent back to prison. This legal process brought the expectations of both the victim's side and the public regarding the ensuring of justice, as well as the scale of the incident, to the agenda once again.
