2,6 million euro bicycle path project approved in Guimarães, Portugal

A significant infrastructure investment has been approved in the historic city of Guimarães, Portugal, in line with sustainable transportation goals. The municipal assembly has officially accepted the construction tender for a new bicycle path that will connect the city center with the town of Pevidém. The total cost of the project exceeds 2,6 million euros, making a substantial financial contribution to the region's transportation network. The tender, awarded to the construction company Eduardo Mota & Gervásio Silva, fulfills a long-standing demand from the local population. This step, finalized during a meeting held by municipal officials on Monday, is considered the beginning of a new era in local transportation planning.

In statements made from the Pevidém parish, it was emphasized that this bicycle path is a project awaited for years by the public and seen as a major necessity. Local residents expressed their satisfaction that the construction phase has been reached following prolonged delays. Authorities stated that the construction process will take a total of 545 days, and at the end of this period, the connection will be completed and put into service. The lack of a safe and eco-friendly transportation alternative had previously posed a serious problem for the local community. The project's final implementation is regarded as a major step in supporting active mobility habits in the region and encouraging walking and cycling.

The new bicycle path will not merely be a simple route connecting two points, but also a part of the Guimarães municipality's comprehensive vision to expand its existing bicycle path network. The infrastructure is planned to start from the Lugar do Reboto area and extend directly to the town of Pevidém. With its history dating back to 2011, it is evident that the project is the product of a long-standing planning process and holds an important place in the regional transportation master plan. The route aims to significantly increase accessibility between neighborhoods by passing through settlements such as Candoso São Martinho, Selho São Jorge, and Selho São Cristóvão. Furthermore, it will strengthen the connection between important green spaces such as the City Sports Park and the Rio Selho Leisure Park, making access to sports and recreation areas much easier.

Once completed, a much safer, more comfortable, and nature-friendly transportation corridor will emerge for both pedestrians and cyclists. At the meeting, the allocation of an approximate budget of 1,1 million euros for the renovation of the municipal road connecting the Ronfe and Gondar regions was also approved. In addition, a massive investment exceeding 4,2 million euros was brought to the agenda for the construction of a new sports hall and facilities for the school named João de Meira. The municipality's comprehensive investment initiatives aim to both strengthen the region's physical infrastructure and improve its educational and sports facilities. When all these projects are evaluated together, it is clearly evident that the local administration is pursuing a decisive financial strategy aimed at regional development and improving the quality of life.
