Chief Engineer of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Killed in Drone Attack

Aleksandr Yakovlev, Chief Engineer of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant under the control of Russian forces, lost his life as a result of a service vehicle being attacked by a drone. In the attack, the driver of the vehicle, Dmitri Filipov, also lost his life at the border between the city of Enerhodar, where the plant is located, and the industrial area.

Aleksey Likhachev, Head of the Russian state company Rosatom, described the attack as a "terrorist act" carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine and accused Western countries of remaining silent. Following the incident, Moscow called on international organizations, especially the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to issue a condemnation statement. So far, the Kyiv administration has not made an official statement regarding Russia's accusations.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that attacks on nuclear facilities and personnel are unacceptable and called for an immediate halt to such military activities. The incident occurred at a time when clashes and nuclear safety concerns around Enerhodar, where Europe's largest nuclear power plant is located, are increasingly escalating.
