Death toll in Bangladesh measles outbreak rises to 779

In the ongoing measles outbreak in Bangladesh, the total death toll has reached 779 following the deaths of 8 more children in the last 24 hours. According to Ministry of Health data, this figure consists of a combination of 684 suspected and 95 laboratory-confirmed deaths. The total number of suspected cases across the country has exceeded 115 thousand.

Following the rising deaths and case numbers, the Bangladesh government has decided to launch an emergency vaccination campaign on 7 April to intervene in the situation. Authorities aim to systematically vaccinate children against measles as part of the campaign. Measles can lead to severe, life-threatening health complications such as pneumonia and encephalopathy.

The growing scale of the outbreak day by day raises concerns for public health in the region. The disease is considered one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths globally. Authorities are prioritizing the acceleration of vaccination efforts due to the continuing increase in case numbers.
