Çayırova Belediyesi's 'Atığın Sıfır Noktası' Collected 103 Tons of Waste in 1 Year

The 'Atığın Sıfır Noktası' facility, opened last year by Çayırova Belediyesi as part of its eco-friendly vision, achieved great success in a one-year period. Continuing its pioneering work in the field of zero waste, the municipality ensured the active participation of the public in the recycling process, preventing tons of waste from mixing into nature. Established across from the Akse Kapalı Semt Pazarı, the facility enabled the proper recycling of a total of approximately 103 tons of waste within a full year. This figure reveals both how much the environmental awareness of the district residents has developed and indicates that the concrete steps taken for a sustainable future are bearing fruit. Authorities emphasize that the facility will continue its activities without interruption in the future in line with climate change combat and zero waste targets.

The 103 tons of waste collected within one year went through a highly detailed and diverse sorting process. In this context, the facility collected exactly 576 kilograms of waste batteries and 2 bin 54 kilograms of vegetable waste oil, preventing these harmful substances from contaminating nature. Additionally, 22 bin 419 kilograms of glass waste, 2 bin 936 kilograms of electronic waste, and 44 bin 317 kilograms of paper and cardboard waste were sent to recycling facilities. Among the collected waste were 1 bin 767 kilograms of mixed packaging, 2 bin 691 kilograms of metal, and 26 bin 192 kilograms of plastic waste, proving the wide diversity. This sorting process stands out as a clear indicator of how comprehensively and meticulously the recycling process is conducted.

One of the most striking and innovative aspects of the project was the system of rewarding citizens of Çayırova in return for the waste they brought. Citizens have the opportunity to collect points based on the type and weight of the waste they bring to the facility, and through these savings, they win various gifts. This practical and encouraging method succeeded in elevating the public's interest and awareness of the recycling process to top levels. Thus, instead of the waste being destroyed as mixed garbage in landfills, it was aimed to be included in a cycle that would contribute to the economy and the environment. The intense interest shown by the public in this system is considered the biggest driving force behind the collection of 103 tons of waste in one year.

The rewards distributed to citizens in return for the points they collected also formed quite a broad spectrum. As a result of recycling purchases, a total of 5 tablet computers, 20 camping chairs, and 2 adult smartwatches were delivered to the doorsteps of the people of Çayırova within one year. Furthermore, prizes that can be used in daily life, such as 10 powerbanks, 15 glass tumblers, 30 steel tea thermoses, and 12 packs of dishwasher tablets for homes, found their owners. To support sports activities, 3 Çayırova Belediyesi Basketball Team jerseys, 30 basketballs, 26 soccer balls, and 24 volleyballs were gifted. In addition to these, the distribution of chess sets and a total of 46 meal vouchers proves how inclusive the project is in terms of both environmental and social life.

Authorities from the Çayırova Belediyesi İklim Değişikliği ve Sıfır Atık Müdürlüğü evaluated the success of the 'Atığın Sıfır Noktası' project with satisfaction and reiterated their goals for the future. In the latest official statement made, it was emphasized that this innovative practice is only a part of the city's overall environmental strategy and will continue to contribute to recycling. The municipality states at every opportunity its intention to increase such sustainable projects in order to reduce its carbon footprint and protect natural resources. Moreover, it is noted that this successful model serves as an example that can inspire other local governments across the country. It is stated that in the coming years, both the amount of waste collected and the public's tighter embrace of this conscious movement are targeted to increase.
