Kambembe Teatral Festivali Turns Cali into a Stage for Celebrating Afro-descendant Culture and Memory

The city of Cali in Kolombiya is hosting a major art event that highlights the cultural richness of communities of African descent. This artistic gathering, called 'Kambembe Teatral', brings together theater plays, workshops, talks, and educational spaces. The main objective of the event is to create a space for dialogue around the memory, identity, and diversity of Afro-descendant peoples. Held for the third time, this organization once again proves how powerful a tool the performing arts are for preserving cultural heritage. Furthermore, it strengthens the recognition of African-rooted culture in Colombia and the transmission of this deep-rooted heritage to future generations.

The word 'Kambembe', which is the name of the festival, means 'call' in African languages, and this concept defines the essence of the event. This name aims to invite citizens to the theater, bringing them together in a shared space for reflection, encounter, and cultural exchange. The various activities within the program focus on making visible the stories shaped by the worldview of Black and Afro-descendant peoples. Through these stories, the unique and profound contributions of these communities to the country's national cultural identity are revealed. Thus, the festival serves not only as an art celebration but also as a platform for deep social awareness and mutual understanding.

The rich program of the festival continues until 5 Temmuz and offers highly comprehensive content. Audiences will have the opportunity to watch a total of 23 theater performances, organized in 11 different sessions and culminating in a grand finale event. These performances are not limited to the city center but spread to different neighborhoods and districts of Cali such as 1, 13, 14, 15, 18, and 20. This inclusive structure of the organization aims to deliver the performing arts directly to the people in different parts of the city. Thus, all segments of the community get the chance to easily access and participate in cultural content with an Afro-descendant perspective.

In addition to stage performances, Kambembe dedicates a significant space to workshops and panels that encourage in-depth thinking. These side events are specifically designed to discuss the memories, challenges, and daily realities faced by Afro-descendant communities. One of the most striking parts of the program is the hosting of an online talk featuring international guests. In this international talk, participants share their experiences regarding how art and culture form a connection in the context of the African diaspora's resistance processes and identity struggles. Thanks to these events, local communities gain the opportunity to learn more closely about similar struggles on a global scale and cultural solidarity networks.

The organizers emphasize that the main goal of this cultural gathering is to increase the visibility of Afro-descendant knowledge and artistic expressions in society. Theater becomes a strategic tool to keep collective memory alive, promote intercultural dialogue, and ultimately create social transformation.
