Tripura government aims to increase pineapple area by 25% in 3 years to boost output

The Tripura state government plans to expand the area under pineapple cultivation by 3,000 hectares over the next three years to increase production, state agriculture minister Ratan Lal Nath said. In an interview with PTI, Nath stated that currently, pineapple is cultivated on 12,000 hectares in Tripura, yielding 178,000 tonnes annually. The expansion aims to boost output significantly.

Tripura, located in northeastern India, is one of the leading pineapple-producing states in the country. The state's climate and soil conditions are highly suitable for pineapple cultivation. The government intends to support farmers by providing subsidies, modern farming techniques, and better market access. Additionally, plans include processing and marketing initiatives to add value to the produce.

To achieve this target, the state government will offer various incentives. Farmers will receive subsidized saplings, fertilizers, and irrigation support. Training programs on pineapple cultivation will also be organized. Minister Nath emphasized that these steps will increase farmers' income and contribute to rural development.

Tripura pineapples are known for their sweetness and aroma, and they are in high demand in the domestic market. With increased production, the government aims to explore export opportunities, particularly to neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar. This is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the state.

Experts note that for the plan to succeed, infrastructure investments and market linkages need to be strengthened. Research efforts to combat climate change and diseases are also crucial. The Tripura government is taking steps in these areas to sustainably increase pineapple production.
