Breakthrough in Agricultural Sustainability in Ege: Packaging Waste is Being Brought into Recycling

For the last four years, a significant sustainability project has been carried out in the Ege Bölgesi to protect the agricultural ecosystem. The "Zirai İlaç Ambalaj Atıklarının Bertarafı/Geri Dönüşümü Projesi", initiated under the leadership of the Ege Tütün İhracatçıları Birliği, aims to prevent agricultural pesticide packaging used in agricultural production from dispersing into nature. Within the scope of the project, pesticide packaging used by farmers and producers are transported to designated collection stations and incorporated into the recycling mechanism from there. Initially launched with 11 collection stations only in the Acıpayam ilçesi, the initiative quickly expanded to surrounding districts and grew. Over time, the total number of stations reached 41 in districts with intensive agriculture such as Beyağaç, Kale, Tavas, Karacasu, and Salihli, and in the 2022-2023 period, this number was increased to 48 locations. This systematic step allows producers in the region to gain environmental awareness and carry out waste management at an institutional level.

Behind the success of the project lies strong inter-institutional collaboration and collective wisdom. Thanks to the decisive steps taken by the Sürdürülebilirlik Çalışma Grubu in 2022, the initiative ceased to be a project of a single union and transformed into a joint model of three unions. The participation of the Ege Kuru Meyve ve Mamulleri İhracatçıları Birliği and the Ege Zeytin ve Zeytinyağı İhracatçıları Birliği in the project significantly increased the regional impact and coverage area. The 41 waste collection points established in the Denizli's Tavas, Beyağaç, Kale, and Acıpayam ilçeler, as well as Aydın's Karacasu ilçesi, are continuously monitored through close coordination with local governments. In addition, intensive planning is underway to expand the project's scope in Manisa, which is famous for its vineyards. In this context, the three exporter unions have decided to put 7 new waste collection points into operation across Manisa.

The sustainability project in question not only provides environmental benefits but also serves to reintroduce waste into the economy. Pesticide packaging accumulated at collection stations is directed to a specially designed recycling flow based on traceability principles. In this way, the recovery rate of waste generated within the agricultural production chain is tried to be kept at the highest level. This process, where quality standards are observed, both reduces the environmental burden left on nature and creates new economic values with recycled materials. Expanded to cover all production areas, this model continues its activities with the vision of minimizing the pressure of agricultural activities on nature.

The contribution of local governments to the project's field success is too significant to be ignored. The Salihli Belediyesi, with its active role, forms the backbone of the operation and provides serious logistical support to the process. Belediye Başkan Yardımcısı Selim Akbıyıkoğlu emphasized how critical this step is, stating that agricultural production continues in all 78 rural neighborhoods of the ilçe. Furthermore, Akbıyıkoğlu stated that the collection stations spread across 7 different locations will be expanded with an inclusive distribution among rural neighborhoods and will be positioned in a way that does not disrupt the daily workflow of the farmers. With the cooperation protocol signed between the Salihli Belediyesi and the Ege İhracatçı Birlikleri, the process has been placed on a solid institutional ground. This protocol, signed at the opening of the collection point in the Adala Mahallesi, proves that the initiative yields concrete results in the field and is not limited to paper only.

Considered an important investment for the future, this initiative holds greater goals for regional development in 2025 and beyond. The strong synergy among project partners contributes to transforming the sustainable production culture into a model that can serve as an example for the entire country, not just limited to one region. Thanks to the continuous strengthening of the region-specific waste management infrastructure, all stages of agricultural production are covered in an environmentally safe manner. While environmental awareness is expected to increase at every level from villages to districts, it is also aimed to reduce producers' costs and consequently increase their competitiveness. This project, where both the conservation of natural resources and economic efficiency are achieved simultaneously, paves the way for the formation of a new sustainability standard in areas where agricultural production is intense.
