Reaction to Raise from Sakarya Retirees: 'What is 17 Percent?', 'They Have Built Everything on the Retirees'

Following the announcement of June inflation data by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the rate of increase for the pensions of millions of retirees has been clarified. Accordingly, SSK and Bağ-Kur retirees will receive a 17.76% increase as of July, while the rate determined for civil servants and civil servant retirees remained at 13.52%. Along with the announcement of official data, fieldwork was conducted in Sakarya as a reflection of the debates across the country. The Medyabar and Tv264 teams questioned the counterpart of these increases in the face of daily life by gathering the opinions reflected on microphones from retirees living in the city.

The opinions of the citizens in street interviews contained quite stark contrasts, and the uncertainty in economic conditions shaped these views. Many retirees, like Mahmut Melih Topal, argued that the incoming raise was merely an imaginary increase and was eroded even by the money spent on transportation, comparing the situation to waste. Hüseyin Sarı emphasized that the salary increase melted away against inflation and demanded a base salary at the level of minimum wage or at least 32,000 TL. These comments clearly revealed the concerns of the vast majority of retirees regarding the erosion of purchasing power.

An interesting perspective also came from İsmail Akgün during the interviews; Akgün claimed that economic balances in Türkiye are constantly established on the backs of retirees and that when a retired raise comes, inflation also rises, so the raise is actually just a cycle. Nizam Hoca, who has an education in economics, drawing attention to the severity of the mathematical data, stated that a 17% raise in an environment where inflation is 75% does not define justice. These views showed that retirees question not only today but also the accuracy and justice of macroeconomic data.

However, there was also a group among retirees who expressed their gratitude and satisfaction. Some retirees, recalling that the state's budget is under strain, emphasized that non-existent resources should not be distributed and the importance of the state staying afloat. Citizens like Ragıp Yeşilyurt and Ali İhsan, however, argued that current economic conditions are quite good, the welfare level of the people can be understood through observations such as car ownership, and the raise given by the state is sufficient and even excessive. These views exposed the gap in how different segments of society perceive the economic picture.

On the other hand, there were retirees who relied on their individual efforts and past savings; one retiree stated that his current needs are met thanks to his working life and savings, and that others should work and save. The general consensus in society converged towards the need to establish a balance between the state's budget discipline and welfare level. Names like Zeki Serdar and Muhammet Yayla expressed that the state did the best it could, conditions could change depending on family size, and that understanding should be shown to each other for the continuation of social order.
