UN Women Workshop: Gender-Sensitive Solutions Against the Climate Crisis Must Be Scaled

The "EmPower II: National Lessons and Scaling Workshop" organized by UN Women Bangladesh at Aloki in Dakka emphasized that women's leadership must be placed at the center of the fight against climate change. Speakers stated that it is essential to strengthen women's position to transform local solutions into national-level action while shaping Bangladesh's climate crisis responses. It was accepted with a general consensus that women, who are one of the groups most affected by the devastating impacts of climate change, should be represented more in decision-making processes. It was expressed that this approach would not only advance gender equality but also significantly strengthen climate resilience strategies. The workshop served as a critical platform for creating sustainable and inclusive climate policies.

The aforementioned workshop demonstrated the importance of international partnership and global solidarity on climate and gender equality issues. The event was realized with the strong financial and political support provided by the governments of Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, and New Zealand. The contribution of these countries is of great importance for the expansion of the "EmPower: Women for..." project and for creating permanent changes in local communities. The interest shown by international donors in this issue confirms that the deep connection between climate change and women's rights has become a global priority. Thanks to collaboration, small-scale initiatives that have been successful locally gain the necessary resources and vision to spread nationwide.

Due to its geographical location, Bangladesh is among the countries where climate change is felt most severely, and this situation further increases the urgency of gender-sensitive solutions. Extreme weather events ranging from floods to cyclones deeply threaten the economic and social lives of women living in rural areas of the country who depend on agriculture for their livelihood. However, at the same time, thanks to their close connection with nature, these women possess unique knowledge in developing survival strategies during crises. At the workshop, it was emphasized that integrating this local knowledge and experience into national policies would increase the overall resilience of society. To break the destructive cycle of the climate crisis, it was stated that women should be seen not only as victims but as fundamental actors of the solution.

This workshop, conducted under the "EmPower II" project, aimed to share lessons drawn from past experiences and to plan future steps. One of the main objectives of the project is to support women in establishing green businesses and to expand climate-friendly agricultural practices. Such initiatives indirectly contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and reinforce the economic independence of women.
