Operation Against 617 Million TL Illegal Betting Ring in Batman: 2 Arrests

According to breaking news announced by the Batman Governor's Office, a comprehensive operation was carried out to dismantle the financial transactions of illegal betting websites. The process was initiated on 13 May by tracking IBAN numbers used for investment transactions on a suspected betting site in the digital environment. MASAK (Financial Crimes Investigation Board) experts, who investigated the matter in depth, conducted a comprehensive retrospective financial analysis through the said IBANs. As a result of these detailed investigations, the activities of 3 different companies established in the Batman center and suspected of laundering illegal betting revenues were identified. It is assessed that a transaction volume of 617 million TL, an extremely high amount, was generated through these companies and that this money was transferred to organized crime syndicates.

Following the reports prepared by MASAK and the digital evidence collected, law enforcement forces took action and made a detailed plan for the operation. The Gendarmerie teams decided to conduct simultaneous raids on a total of 4 different addresses in the Batman city center that were previously identified and assessed to be harboring suspects. In these simultaneous operations carried out in the early hours of the morning, 3 suspects, who are alleged to have actively taken part in the financial leg of the illegal betting network, were successfully detained. In the searches conducted at the suspects' residences and workplaces, many materials, confirmed to be used as criminal elements, were confiscated. The confiscated materials include laptops and numerous phones thought to have been used to transfer the proceeds of crime.

The focus on digital evidence, especially during the physical searches, aims to completely dismantle the criminal network. Two laptops, assessed to have been used in the commission of the crime, were confiscated during the searches carried out by the Gendarmerie teams. Additionally, 5 mobile phones and 5 SIM cards, thought to have been used by the suspects for communication and to manage accounts opened in the names of different individuals, were handed over to the security forces as evidence. The examination of these digital materials by forensic IT experts is of critical importance in clarifying the scale of the incident and who it served. It is stated that the new evidence to be obtained may also reveal connections extending to other illegal betting networks across the country.

The 3 detained suspects were referred to the courthouse after the completion of their interrogation processes at the gendarmerie station. At the courthouse, the existing evidence was evaluated in line with the statements of the suspects who appeared before the judge. The Magistrates' Court is ruling on the request for the arrest of the individuals, who will be tried on charges of facilitating illegal betting and laundering the proceeds of crime. The court decided to arrest 2 of the 3 suspects and sent them to prison due to the state of the evidence and the nature of the crime. The remaining 1 suspect was released by applying judicial control measures such as a ban on leaving the country and a signature requirement.

This operation became one of the most recent examples demonstrating the ongoing fight against illegal betting and virtual gambling sites, which have increased across Turkey in recent years. These illegal platforms, which reach large masses and cause citizens to suffer serious financial losses, are among the primary targets of MASAK and police/gendarmerie units. Financial monitoring methods are effectively used against such rings that become institutionalized through company appearances in order to prevent crime proceeds from being introduced into the legal economy. Authorities state that such high-volume operations create a significant deterrent effect against other individuals and organizations with the potential to commit crimes. This successful operation carried out in Batman went down in history as a critical step in maintaining public order and fighting financial crimes.
