Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's Harsh Reaction to NATO Summit Detentions: 'Obstruction of Democratic Rights is Unacceptable'

CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu reacted harshly to the detention of journalists, academics, and civil society representatives during the NATO Summit. In a statement made via his social media account, Kılıçdaroğlu described the obstruction of the right to non-violent democratic protest as unacceptable. Emphasizing that arbitrary detentions openly threaten the right to assembly and demonstration, Kılıçdaroğlu stated that such practices are incompatible with democratic standards. Noting that protests are a normal part of democratic life at international summits attended by world leaders, the CHP leader argued that restrictions on freedoms should not be allowed.

The CHP leader's statement notably placed a special emphasis on press freedom. Kılıçdaroğlu demanded the lifting of pressure on journalists, academics, lawyers, and civil society. He explicitly stated that they do not accept the detention of many reporters, notably T24 and Odatv correspondents, using the NATO Summit as a pretext. According to the CHP leader, what damages a country's international reputation is not the existence of protests, but rather the obstruction of democratic protest rights. In this context, he argued that adopting a libertarian approach would strengthen Turkey's global image. He added that blocking peaceful demonstrations is fundamentally contrary to the principles of a democratic state of law.

Kılıçdaroğlu, who also emphasized the relationship between the functioning of democracy and press freedom in his statement, made a crucial observation. He particularly underlined that press freedom is not a privilege, but an indispensable requirement of a democratic state of law. Stating that where an impartial and independent press is silenced, the nation cannot hear the truth, Kılıçdaroğlu noted that this situation would also hinder the development of social awareness. He argued that if truth and transparency are restricted, democracy cannot survive because healthy public oversight would disappear. Therefore, he added, any pressure applied to the media and civil society directly threatens the foundations of the democratic system.

Kılıçdaroğlu's remarks have brought the debates on the limits of democratic rights and freedom of expression in Turkey back to the agenda. While the legal basis and democratic legitimacy of the detentions have begun to be questioned, international human rights organizations are also expected not to remain indifferent to the issue.
