PFAS Pollution: Tap Water in Haraucourt Soon to Be Drinkable

In the town of Haraucourt, located in the Ardennes region of France, the tap water consumption ban imposed a year ago due to PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) pollution is about to be lifted. The drinking ban, introduced by a prefectural decree on 10 Temmuz 2025, will end with the activation of an activated carbon filtration system. Mayor Clément Panard announced that the prefecture will lift the ban by 13 Temmuz 2026 Pazartesi at the latest. Panard noted that the process is progressing rapidly, thanking the efforts of the previous mayor Frédéric Latour in securing subsidies and the contribution of the Veolia company. While it is remembered that the townspeople have been unable to drink tap water for a year, this development has brought great relief.

A three-ton capacity activated carbon tank was installed in the town in early Haziran 2026, and the water treatment process began. The Mayor stated that the initial analysis results are positive and that the results of water samples from the village are awaited. The prefectural decree dated 3 Temmuz 2026 allows the water in Haraucourt to be treated for human consumption. Panard emphasized that the water is already passing through the activated carbon filter and that only the official decision to lift the ban is awaited. It is noted that the activated carbon system significantly filters out PFAS molecules.

However, the mayor admits that this solution does not completely solve the PFAS problem. He stated that activated carbon filters out sixteen out of twenty PFAS molecules, but extreme caution is required regarding the remaining four molecules. Additionally, the knowledge that activated carbon also filters pesticides provides a small consolation for the townspeople. The mayor argues that although this system is not a permanent solution, it currently makes the water drinkable. Authorities will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the filtration system through regular analyses.

Bernadette Pion, a resident of Haraucourt and a representative of the PFAS collective, is approaching the news more cautiously. Pion expressed her concerns by emphasizing that activated carbon is not a panacea and that some types of PFAS are not filtered. Stating that PFAS substances that have accumulated in the blood for approximately thirty years cannot be eliminated from the body in this way, Pion expressed health concerns, especially for children and grandchildren. PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," are dangerous chemicals that can remain in the body and the environment for long periods without degrading. According to Pion, this situation is a serious public health issue that cannot be solved merely by filtering the water.

The PFAS collective is waging a broad legal battle encompassing six communes in the Portes du Luxembourg region. Residents living in the area, which includes the communes of Malandry, Villy, La Ferté-sur-Chiers, Blagny, and Linay, have collectively filed a criminal complaint. The collective complaint filed through their lawyer Me Abramowitch on 29 Haziran 2026 is supported by 47 plaintiffs. The complaint includes the charge of endangering human life as a result of PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," contaminating the tap water. Bernadette Pion stated that as of 9 Temmuz 2026, she has distributed the complaint documents to the plaintiffs and they hope that justice will be served.
