Sonam Wangchuk's Hunger Strike and Parliament March Spark Political Debate

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 to protest irregularities in the education system and exam paper leaks in India, announced that he is ready to end his strike under certain conditions. Wangchuk making this announcement on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament sparked a political debate over the timing and strategy of the action.

Wangchuk stated that he would end his strike only if the government acknowledges its failures in the education system, allows him to present his demands to the members of parliament, or lawmakers give assurance that they will come to the hospital and take the issue to Parliament. The timing of the hunger strike and the planned "Chalo Sansad" march towards Parliament coinciding with the first day of the session raised questions about whether the action was planned to gain maximum political visibility or if it was a method of democratic accountability.
