Skeptical View on Political Separation in Romania from Former President Băsescu

Romania's former President Traian Băsescu does not believe that the ties between the country's two major parties, the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD), will be completely severed. Even though decisions to separate were made at the PNL congress chaired by Ilie Bolojan, Băsescu thinks that these two parties will reunite and continue their cooperation. According to his view, the habit of PNL and PSD to form partnerships despite various disagreements and political crises in the past is deeply rooted. The former head of state holds a strong belief that, no matter what happens to the parties, they will never be able to completely break away from each other. While expressing this thought, Băsescu also highlights the parties' inadequacy in standing alone in the political arena.

According to Băsescu's analysis, the loss of power by PNL and PSD in the political landscape is the most significant factor pushing them back together. Over time, as both parties' votes and spheres of political influence have narrowed, they no longer have a chance to come to power alone or to have a strong presence in the opposition. Therefore, the pragmatism inherent in Romanian politics will force these two parties to sit at the table again. Băsescu argues that politicians are always ready to revive old alliances in line with their own interests. This situation creates a structure that prevents the radical changes expected by the voters from taking place. Consequently, he claims that the harsh decisions made and the strong words spoken at the congress are largely election investments.

In this assessment, the former president emphasizes the 20-year shared history of the two parties. According to Băsescu, PNL and PSD have always shown a tendency to act together in Romania's political darkness and problematic processes over the past twenty years. This partnership formed the basis of policies that were far from transparent and often harshly criticized in the country. The fact that these two parties have been acting together for such a long time has caused the ideological boundaries between them to be completely erased. Băsescu suggests that these parties have become so dependent on each other that they cannot separate, bound together much like the habits of an old marriage. Stating that the voter base needs to see this reality, Băsescu emphasizes that in practice, they are not much different from each other.

On the other hand, a different political atmosphere is blowing within the PNL around the party's new leader, Ilie Bolojan. PNL Member of the European Parliament Daniel Buda made highly optimistic statements regarding his party's new era and future. Buda expresses that they believe the party can continue its path strongly on its own under Bolojan's vision. In fact, Buda's statements contain a bold prediction that Bolojan could remain in the prime minister's seat until 2028. This remark shows that PNL has completely burned its bridges with PSD and aims to come to power alone in future elections. The liberal politician exhibits strong confidence that with the new leadership, his party can govern the country without needing its former coalition partners.

Băsescu's skeptical approach and PNL's determined statements reveal the uncertainty of the country's political future.
