Ghana Highways Minister Warns Contractors Against Weather Excuses

Ghana Minister of Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza has warned contractors working on road projects across the country against attributing delays to adverse weather conditions. The Minister emphasized that seasonal changes occurring throughout the year must be closely monitored and that planning accordingly is essential. He stated that contractors need to revise their construction schedules by taking potential adverse conditions into account. He expressed that the goal is for all projects to adhere to the initially agreed-upon timeline and be completed without disruption. He added that this approach aims to prevent the waste of public resources and ensure that infrastructure services are delivered to the public on time.

Agbodza, one of the senior officials of the Gana government, is currently on an extensive inspection tour covering various parts of the country while making these significant warnings. As part of these inspections, the rehabilitation works of urban roads in settlements such as Jasikan, Dodo Pepesu, Nkwanta, and Dambai were closely examined. These inspections constitute only a part of a detailed road control tour covering the Eastern, Volta, and Oti regions of the country. The Minister evaluates the current status of the projects through his firsthand observations in the field and holds officials accountable. It is stated that on-site inspection of these projects, which aim to improve the transportation comfort of the local public, is of great importance to enhance the quality of the work.

Acknowledging that adverse weather conditions like rain can naturally slow down construction activities, the Minister stated that this cannot be an irredeemable excuse. He emphasized that he expects contractors to thoroughly examine the climate and rainfall data of the respective region beforehand and develop appropriate strategies. Agbodza underlined that weather should not be allowed to completely halt project progress, highlighting the importance of accelerating work when the weather is favorable. It was noted that if the works are carried out with proper timing, sufficient time can be allocated for the asphalt base to settle, even if the rainy season begins. With this proactive approach, it is aimed to prevent seasonal challenges from hindering the delivery of road projects.

Stating that the government is fully determined to deliver road infrastructure with high quality and on time in line with national development goals, the Minister reminded that this process is not one-sided. He stated that contractors are also expected to flawlessly fulfill their contractual responsibilities despite seasonal difficulties. He emphasized that massive projects implemented in consideration of national interests must be supported by worker and firm productivity. Furthermore, he noted that civil engineering works are the lifeblood of the economy, adding that professionals employed in these jobs need to exercise greater care and discipline.

Minister Agbodza firmly demanded that contractors exhibit greater efficiency, transparency, and professionalism during the execution phase of road projects. He emphasized that the public resources allocated to them are constantly monitored by members of parliament or government auditors, and the value of every penny spent must be justified. He stated that infrastructure delivered early and with quality workmanship will revitalize the country's commercial life and accelerate national development. Additionally, it was pointed out that projects not completed on time cause significant damage to the Gana economy, and firms were given cautionary warnings. Ultimately, it is evaluated that these steps and strict monitoring will pave the way for the construction of a smooth, safe, and high-quality road network across the country.
