Minneapolis Park Board prepares case for property tax increase

At the June 17 Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board meeting, the board voted 8-1 to decommission the Minnehaha Off-Leash Dog Park by the end of the year, citing its location on culturally significant Dakota land (Mni Owe Sni). Commissioner Cathy Abene was the sole dissenter. The decision followed consultations with Indigenous leaders and historians. Over 30 residents spoke, with opinions divided. The board also discussed the process for setting a maximum property tax levy, noting that a 5.86% increase would be needed to cover 2027 budget costs including new staff and amenities.
