Ukraine launched a drone attack on the Mavi Akım facility supplying gas to Türkiye

Russian energy giant Gazprom announced that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of Ukrainian origin attacked a gas compression station in the Krasnodar region of southern Russia. The Krasnodarskaya pumping station targeted in the attack constitutes an important part of the critical Mavi Akım pipeline, which carries Russian natural gas to Türkiye. This attack, carried out in the early hours of 7 Temmuz morning, went down in history as a strategic move aimed at hitting energy infrastructure rather than military targets. Such incidents occurring in the region have once again demonstrated that the war is not limited to the front lines but also directly threatens energy supply chains. The international public is following these new threats to regional energy security with concern.

According to statements from Gazprom officials, the attack did not cause any gas disruptions, and emergency protocols were immediately activated by the facility's personnel. Although some damage occurred at the facility as a result of the attack, thanks to the rapid intervention of the teams, the gas flow to Türkiye through the Mavi Akım line continued without interruption. Currently, repair and maintenance works aimed at fixing the damage are being carried out with great care. Gazprom emphasized that the facility's defense was successfully ensured and that all measures were taken to ensure the security of energy exports. This situation also reveals how resilient and prepared the critical energy infrastructure is against potential sabotage.

This latest attack is considered as part of the Kiev administration's intensification of long-range drone attacks against energy facilities and civilian infrastructure within Russia, following the blows it has suffered on the battlefield in recent months. Another notable development in the course of the war was the capture of Konstantinovka, one of Ukraine's key defense points, by Russian troops, as announced by the Russian Ministry of Defense. This strategic gain paves the way for Russia to advance towards Slavyansk and Kramatorsk, the last two major centers remaining in Kiev's hands in the Donetsk region. These setbacks at the front appear to have created a need for Ukraine to shift its offensive to different areas, particularly energy facilities on Russian soil. This new dimension of the conflict causes the humanitarian and economic crisis in the region to deepen further.

In fact, this is not the first attack attempt targeting the gas infrastructure serving pipelines such as Mavi Akım and TürkAkımı. Previously, in Mart ayında, Gazprom announced that it had successfully repelled a Ukrainian drone attack targeting three different compression stations feeding both the TürkAkımı and Mavi Akım pipelines. At that time, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the attack on the Russkaya station, in particular, was intended to completely halt the gas supply going to European Union consumers through the TürkAkımı line. In Nisan ayında, a similar drone attack was carried out against the same station. These consecutive events clearly demonstrate that energy lines have become a new and permanent front in the conflict.

Following these tensions, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitriy Peskov stated that Russia was taking all measures at its disposal to minimize the threat of such terrorist acts by Ukraine against the global energy system. Peskov also expressed hope that Türkiye and other relevant countries would use their influence over Kiev to take steps to stop these types of attacks on energy infrastructure. On the other hand, Moscow pledged to carry out "systematic and consistent attacks" against Ukraine's military infrastructure in retaliation for Kiev's actions. Indeed, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that a new series of pinpoint strikes were carried out against Ukrainian military-industrial facilities in Kiev in the early hours of Çarşamba. These mutual strategic strikes show that the conflict has increasingly threatened a much wider area.
