7.5 Million Dong Fine for Vendor Who Defrauded Tourist in Vietnam

A fraud incident that occurred in the night market of Da Nang, one of Vietnam's popular tourist cities, has brought the issues of commercial ethics and consumer rights in the region to the agenda. The process, which began when a tourist noticed that the durian fruit they purchased was weighed heavy on the scale, resulted in a swift intervention by the authorities. Stating that the scale showed 4 kilograms instead of 1.7 kilograms while buying the fruit, the tourist immediately reported the situation to the local police units. After the incident became known, a huge backlash occurred among both the local people and other tourists visiting the city. This incident once again revealed the necessity of ensuring shopping security in local markets.

On 8 July, the day of the incident, police teams on duty in the An Hai district of Da Nang took action immediately after receiving the tourist's complaint. Launching a rapid investigation, the police seized and inspected the vendor's stall and weighing instruments in question. As a result of the inspections, it was officially determined that the vendor used a rigged scale to deceive the customer. Following this determination, an administrative penalty decision was made against the vendor who victimized the tourist. The swift and decisive intervention of the local security forces regarding the issue also served as a deterrent to other vendors in the area. This successful operation by the police went down in history as an important step demonstrating how seriously consumer complaints are taken.

It was announced that a reasonable financial fine was imposed on the vendor who was caught conducting this fraudulent commercial practice. The fine amount, calculated in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations, was determined as approximately 7.5 million Vietnamese Dong. This amount is considered the price of the vendor's attempt to make unfair profits. It is emphasized that the purpose of the said sanction is not only to punish the current crime but also to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. This situation, which is proof that the audit mechanisms in the region are actively working, plays a critical role in protecting consumer security. The authorities stated that all weighing operations in the marketplaces will be regularly inspected and shady vendors will not be tolerated.
