US Military Joins Nepal Flood Disaster Relief, Death Toll Exceeds 1,300

In Nepal, sudden floods occurred in the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi rivers due to a glacier collapse and landslide in the Himalayas. More than 1,300 people lost their lives in the disaster, thousands are missing, and over 65,000 people were affected; roads, bridges, and homes were destroyed.

The US military joined humanitarian aid operations, beginning to deliver emergency life-saving supplies and equipment to affected areas. Washington pledged $500,000 and an additional $3.6 million in humanitarian aid through Catholic Relief Services.

30 members of the US Congress wrote a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio requesting the deployment of a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) for search and rescue efforts, high-altitude equipment, thermal drones, and satellite imagery. India, the UK, South Korea, China, the World Bank, and the UN also provided support.
