Human Smuggling Operation in Çanakkale: 1 Organizer and 37 Illegal Migrants Detained

Çanakkale Provincial Gendarmerie Command teams have conducted comprehensive and decisive operations to prevent illegal migrant smuggling activities in the region. Within the scope of these operations, 1 organizer, determined to have played a direct role in the migrant smuggling organization, was caught and detained. As a result of the efforts, 37 illegal migrants of various nationalities trying to go abroad through illegal means were stopped by security forces. It was stated that these operations are just one part of the fight against human smuggling networks and similar activities will continue. The intelligence studies of the security forces and the controls carried out in the field continue to play an effective role in preventing the commission of crimes.

During the searches carried out during the operations, a large number of materials considered to be used in human smuggling activities were seized. It is being focused on the possibility that these materials could be vehicles or equipment used by organizers to transport and hide migrants. In addition, cash money, estimated to be obtained from criminal activities and expressed in monetary value, was seized and kept under protection by the security forces. It was learned that this seized money will be handed over to the relevant authorities to hit the financial resource of the organization and will be used as evidence in legal processes. It was reported that necessary administrative and judicial proceedings have been initiated against the organizer and the migrants within the framework of the applied legal procedures.

It is known that human smuggling is an international crime organization that endangers the lives of migrants, and the Çanakkale straits continue to be a risky route for such transitions. Since illegal migrants are at risk of losing their lives during dangerous passages by sea, it is emphasized that such operations are of vital importance. It is stated that gendarmerie teams try to minimize this danger with controls carried out both on land and at sea and keep the security level high in the region. In the studies conducted, it is a known fact that migrants are often held in poor conditions by human smugglers or put out to sea without regard for their safety.

Findings that the detained organizer collected high amounts of money from illegal migrants trying to leave the country and managed this organization have deepened the investigation. It is determined that the seized money belongs to the income of this crime trade, and confiscation of property can be applied. It is shared that the organizer's criminal record for similar crimes is being investigated and works are being carried out meticulously to identify other members of the network. It is evaluated that such organizers may be linked to organized crime groups and have a structure requiring international cooperation.

Due to the geographical location of Çanakkale, it is stated that security measures in the region are constantly reviewed and updated as it is a transit point frequently used for smuggling activities. Citizens are warned not to trust such initiatives and to report suspicious situations to the authorities in order not to provide financial support to human smuggling networks. Coordinated work by the gendarmerie and coast guard units will continue uninterrupted to prevent these organizations that disregard human life. Official statements have been made that operations in this direction will continue decisively in the future and that criminals will be punished in accordance with the principle of the rule of law.
