'Tariflávio' Criticisms Grew After Flávio Bolsonaro's US Visit

The recent visit to the United States by Brazilian Senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has become a major topic of discussion on social media and in the public eye. Bolsonaro went to Washington to prevent the US from applying additional customs tariffs to Brazilian products, where he spoke at an official hearing organized by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). It is clear that this visit aimed to portray Bolsonaro as a leader defending Brazil's interests. However, media analyses and audience reactions in messaging groups reveal that the situation did not go as expected. Following the visit, the nickname "Tariflávio" (Tariff + Flávio) rapidly spread on the internet, creating a perception that negatively impacted the senator's image.

Social media and messaging application analyses regarding the matter show that a large portion of the public evaluated the visit with a critical eye. While approximately 80 percent of the users who expressed an opinion on the visit displayed a stance against Flávio Bolsonaro, the proportion of those defending him remained at 20 percent. According to critics, this move was interpreted as a betrayal and the surrendering of Brazil's national interests to the US. When describing the situation, users frequently used heavy expressions such as "dependency," "tutelage," and "colonial Brazil." This situation clearly demonstrates that the strategy the senator attempted to pursue within the scope of his pre-presidential campaign did not yield the desired result.

One of the main agenda items of Bolsonaro's US visit was to demand that Pix, Brazil's popular instant payment system, also be excluded from this commercial dispute. The senator had previously formally requested, in a document sent to the USTR, the suspension of the proposed 25 percent additional customs duty and the removal of Pix from the topic of discussion. However, this move also failed to see the expected support and a counter-narrative gained traction even on the Pix issue. Critics argued that by trying to limit the expansion of the Pix system, Flávio Bolsonaro was actually creating an environment favorable to US-based credit card companies. These allegations further deepened the perception that the senator was serving foreign interests rather than defending Brazil's technological independence.

Another complex issue brought up during the visit was the connections with Brazilian state banks and Master Bank, which is associated with the Lula government. Flávio Bolsonaro bringing up this banking relationship unexpectedly reignited a toxic debate even within the bolsonarism movement. The debate extended to the documentary titled "Dark Horse," made about Jair Bolsonaro, and the role banker Daniel Vorcaro played in financing this production. According to monitoring reports, the Master Bank issue stood out as the most negative topic monitored during the senator's visit. This situation showed that bringing up these issues, even if intended as a strategic attack, caused significant discomfort within the conservative base as much as it did among pro-government factions.

In light of all these developments, Flávio Bolsonaro's US visit became devisif even before the Donald Trump administration announced its final tariff decision. Evolving events show that Bolsonaro initially tried to distance himself from a crisis he was associated with, but could not fully control the consequences. Furthermore, this process revived old suspicions and speculations that Brazil's strategic assets, such as Petrobras and pre-sal, would be transferred to foreigners. Concerns that the US would create an extreme influence in Brazil's domestic politics during a potential presidential term are frequently expressed in opposition circles.
