Horror in Girit: 55-Year-Old Woman Tortured For One Month

In the city of Heraklion on the island of Girit, Yunanistan, the systematic torture of a 55-year-old Rus woman has drawn a massive backlash across the country. The 42-year-old Rumen woman, who is alleged to be the perpetrator of the incident, mercilessly abused the victim for one month in a house by tying her up, beating her, and cutting her hair with an axe. As part of the police investigation, a full 11 video recordings proving the moments of terrible violence the victim was subjected to were seized. In these videos, the women are seen hitting the defenseless victim on the head with a club and hurling continuous threats and insults at her. The magnitude of the events and the suffering endured by the victim have deeply shaken the authorities and the public, even after the examination of the emerging evidence.

The details of the horrifying events began to become even clearer with the testimonies of neighbors residing in the area. A woman who spoke to a television program on the Mega channel and whose name was given only as "Eleni Hanım" explained how deeply affected she was by the terrifying screams and sounds coming from the house late at night. The neighbor stated that especially after 23:00 at night, the events got out of control and the sounds of a fight escalated from inside. She stated that the perpetrator intentionally and deliberately played music extremely loud to prevent these sounds from being heard from the outside. She added in her words that in the late hours of the night, the argument became even more violent, and she even heard the sounds of knives and axes from inside, as well as terrifying threats being hurled such as "I will kill you."

According to the accounts of neighbor Eleni, despite the magnitude of this brutality, there was great fear and terror regarding notifying the police. She stated that she could not muster the courage to notify the authorities or the landlord during these terrible events occurring at night because she feared for her own life. She explained her reason for not calling the police as the intense fear she felt because she had to go to work late at night and could not know exactly who was in the house. On the other hand, it was learned that other people living in the neighborhood had reported the situation to the police previously with similar concerns. However, unfortunately, it was claimed that such complaints had remained inconclusive in the past and the police intervention was inadequate, which paved the way for the incident to continue for one month.

The resolution of this terrible incident was actually made possible thanks to a theft report, which is an entirely different crime. The scale of the situation emerged at the beginning of the month when police teams launched a comprehensive investigation upon a complaint about a stolen cell phone. While investigating the theft, authorities coincidentally came across evidence showing the torture inflicted on the 55-year-old woman and, realizing the gravity of the situation, immediately launched an operation. Following a swift and coordinated effort, the victimized Rus woman was found in a house on Erifili Caddesi in the early morning hours of 3 Temmuz. Upon her rescue, the woman had visible signs of battery and deep wounds on her body and head; in fact, the fact that only a few tufts of hair remained on her scalp laid bare how long and with what level of brutality the violence was applied.

In her statement to the authorities after being rescued, the victim explained that the time she spent in that house was continuous and unbearable torture, and that her life had turned into a nightmare. It was learned that the woman, who was usually tied with a cable and left in a paralyzed state, managed to break free from her bonds by taking advantage of a moment when the Rumen perpetrator fell asleep. In the in-depth investigation conducted by the authorities, the possibility that the main motivation behind this terrible crime could be romantic jealousy is being considered. Although the landlord claimed not to have been present in the house during the period when the events occurred, the police, in light of the events, determined that the apartment was rented to the 42-year-old suspect and detained her as well.
