Greece is located in a high-risk region due to increasing heat waves

Prof. Dr. Athanasios Argiriou, a faculty member of the Department of Physics at the University of Patras and a researcher at the Atmospheric Physics Laboratory, stated that Greece is becoming increasingly risky under the effects of climate change. Noting that Europe has been warming at approximately twice the global average rate since the 1980s, Argiriou emphasized that this will lead to an increase in the frequency and intensity of severe heat waves in the country.

Scientific analyses reveal that the European continent, including the Mediterranean basin, is disproportionately affected by the process of global warming. Europe, with a warming rate twice the global average, is therefore much more adversely affected by changes in atmospheric balances. This rapid warming trend implies serious increases in the number of extremely hot days in the future and record heat vulnerability.

The warnings from Professor Argiriou concern not only the general rise in temperatures but also the character of extreme weather events. It is predicted that heat waves will not only occur more frequently but also with much higher intensity and longer durations. This situation will cause temperatures experienced particularly in the summer months to be much harsher than expected and create pressure on human health and agricultural production.

It is inevitable that Greece will be affected by these changes due to its geographical location. Assessments show that the country falls into the 'high risk' group in climate scenarios. Climate change effects such as increased risk of fire due to rising temperatures, depletion of water resources, and increased energy demand are putting Greece in a difficult process environmentally and economically.
