Harsh Reaction from the Kremlin to Apple's Removal of VK and Russian Applications

US-based technology giant Apple has removed popular social media and communication applications owned by VK, one of Russia's largest technology companies, from the App Store. Among the removed applications are platforms with millions of users, such as VK, Zen, VK Video, VK Messenger, VK Music, VK Dating, and Odnoklassniki. This decision drew a massive backlash from a large Russian-speaking audience in Russia and around the world. The Kremlin announced that they are closely following the matter and evaluate the situation as a retaliatory step. This unilateral decision by the company ushered in a new phase of tension in the international technology world.

VK officials, making a statement on the matter, stated that Apple made this decision without any prior warning and provided them with no official justification. VK spokespersons emphasized that the company is not on any official sanctions or reflection list, finding the blocking of the application's download unjust. It was expressed that since the applications were pulled from the store, they will no longer receive updates, and this situation will inevitably lead to serious technical problems over time. Apple targeting Russian-origin applications is not actually an incident happening for the first time; in the past, some Russian applications were also removed from the store due to similar content and sanction policies. Such steps are interpreted as a clear manifestation of the ongoing digital cold war between Russia and Western technology companies. Previously, Russian authorities blocked access in the country to popular American platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X in retaliation for similar restrictions applied to Western-origin platforms. In order to prevent this victimization and direct users to alternative routes, Kremlin officials made a direct appeal to the public. Peskov advised Russian citizens whose access to applications was cut off to switch to the Android operating system or domestic systems being developed in the country. It was stated that users could continue to use their favorite applications seamlessly through these alternative platforms, attempting to provide reassurance.
